Servicing, maintenance and car accidents

You should follow your vehicle's maintenance / servicing schedule to protect your car and keep you safe on the road. Your logbook or owner's manual will detail when your car service's are due and you may need to keep up to date with this to maintain your warranty, if applicable.

Servicing and maintenance

You might be able to maintain certain aspects of your car yourself by reading the owner's manual, learning how to check the levels and fill up the fluids when required. This includes knowing the location of the engine oil dipstick, automatic transmission fluid dipstick, radiator coolant, power steering fluid, brake and clutch fluid, windscreen washer reservoir

and the air conditioning reservoir. You can also check your tyre pressure at your local service station and inflate your tyres with air as per your owner's manual. There are some courses online that may provide you with more detail on how to look after your car.

There are several things that you can do to help you prepare for unknown events. This includes:

  • Having jumper leads available in your car if you breakdown

  • Having a jack, a spare tyre and learning how to change a flat tyre

  • Consider purchasing roadside assistance.

Car accidents

It is a good idea to have comprehensive car insurance in case you have a car accident, which will cover both yours and the other person's car.

If you have an accident, it is important that you do the following as some of this information may be needed if you lodge a claim with your car insurance company.

  • Take a photo of the other person's drivers license or take down their name, address and drivers license number

  • Ask the other driver for their phone number

  • Ask the other driver for details of their car insurance and who it is with (both third party (CTP) and comprehensive car insurance)

  • Write down the car make, model and registration plate number for the other vehicle

  • Make a note or take pictures of the damage caused to both of the vehicles involved in the accident

  • Arrange a tow truck and call 000 depending on the damage and injuries sustained

  • Write down the details of any witnesses who saw the accident occur

  • Let your car insurance company know of the accident and lodge a claim so your car can get fixed.
