During pregnancy

Medical care

There are different birthing options when you have a baby, including delivering in a public hospital, private hospital or having a home birth. You may also want to consider a doula which is someone who can support you and provide practical and emotional care throughout your pregnancy, birth and after birth. Talk to your doctor or midwife about the different options available in your local area and what is recommended for your individual situation. More information is available on the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby or the Raising Children Network websites.

The number of check-ups depends on your pregnancy but you can expect 8 to 10 visits for a first baby if there are no specific health concerns. You should aim to have your first appointment about your pregnancy within the first 10 weeks.

Blood tests and ultrasound scans during pregnancy are an early check for potential problems. These may include:

  • Dating scan (after 6 weeks)

  • Nuchal translucency scan and blood test (between 11 and 14 weeks)

  • Morphology scan (between 18 and 20 weeks)

  • Test for gestational diabetes around 24-28 weeks.

Other options

If you are having trouble falling pregnant, talk to your doctor or obstetrician to see what help is available. This might include fertility treatments or In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). The Australian Government have a comprehensive website called YourIVFSuccess if you want further information. Each state in Australia has its own legislation regarding adoption of which you can find out more at the links below.

Supplements

Taking folic acid when you are planning a pregnancy is recommended from 1 month before getting pregnant and throughout the first 12 weeks (3 months) of pregnancy. Australian Government advice is to take 400mcg a day. This will reduce your risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect such as spina bifida.

Extra iodine of 150mg per day is also recommended during pregnancy and while breast feeding to help baby’s brain and nervous system development. Ask your doctor or midwife if you need to take any other vitamins or tablets during your pregnancy.

Support

Antenatal classes might be useful to prepare you for labour, birth, breastfeeding and parenting. You will also meet other new parents through the process who can support you through your pregnancy and parenting journey.

You can learn more on what to expect during pregnancy, birth and beyond by visiting the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby website.

There are some Government payments that help with the costs of raising a baby, including Paid Parental Leave, Dad and Partner Pay and Family Tax Benefit. To find out more and your eligibility, visit the Services Australia website.
